Professor Maffulli served as a Medical Consultant for ACF Fiorentina, one of Italy’s premier football clubs, and has an extensive history of treating elite and professional athletes. Professor Maffulli has been a consultant for Chelsea FC, Stoke FC, Fulham FC, and has operated on professional and elite athletes who successfully returned to high level sport, taking part in European and World Championships and the Olympics.
His global reputation was further highlighted when he was selected by the London Organising Committee to lead the Orthopaedic Sports Foot and Ankle Surgery Service for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He also coordinated the medical services for the World University Games of 2018
A leader in his field, Professor Maffulli is a former President of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association
He serves on numerous international committees in Sports Medicine and Trauma & Orthopaedics. Editor in Chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research and of the British Medical Bulletin, Prof Maffulli sits on the Editorial Boards of more than 10 major journals, helping shape the global direction of research and practice in his specialty.
With more than 1700 peer-reviewed publications and 12 authored or edited textbooks, including the landmark Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery, Professor Maffulli is one of the most prolific and influential orthopedic researchers in the world. He has pioneered over 50 minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques that are now used internationally.
In 2025, the Stanford University ranking has put Prof Maffulli at the most influential Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Surgeon in the world for the second consecutive year.
